The music on ‘The Dance of Venus’ is draws upon rhythmic ideas and concepts found in Indian classical music (particularly the repertoire of the tabla). Many of the grooves are constructed using the rhythmic system ‘Parandt’ – a set of mnemonic syllables that can be used to construct longer phrases. Short rhythmic cells can be manipulated to create variations within grooves. Each groove can be spoken and the repertoire of the tabla is traditionally taught in this way.
